Dog Rescue Stories: Benny and Dexter Were Both Abandoned by Their Previous Humans

By Jarissa Aquinde, Positively Woof Rescue and Adoption Story Editor

Shortly after graduating college, Benny and Dexter’s forever mom and dad moved in together, and immediately wanted a dog. They went to the Sacramento County Bradshaw Animal Shelter to look around. Although they saw a slew of lovable mutts, it wasn’t until the end of the day that they locked eyes on Dexter (then named Fred). Unfortunately, the shelter was closing and they had to leave, forever-friendless for the day. Benny and Dexter’s mom begged their dad to go back the following evening after work, praying that Dexter would still be there. He was, and they asked to take him into a private play room to get to know him. As soon as the door closed behind them, Dex was all over them with love, hugs, kisses, and tail wags! His mom wrapped her arms around him and told his dad to go get the man in charge because Dexter was definitely going home with them. He was a year old at the time, and slightly under weight. He had been found wandering in a field and they believed his previous owners had abandoned him. Although his parents had to spend years reconditioning him to not have severe separation anxiety, they never once questioned his love and devotion.

Two short years later, Dexter and his parents moved across the country as a family. It was there that they decided their family was incomplete and started looking for another furry friend to rescue. They stumbled upon Benny (then Gage) at Furbaby Rescue of NC. He was literally a tiny Dexter! Only a few weeks old, and no bigger than a grapefruit, his online profile instantly stole his parents hearts. He, his brothers and his sisters, had been abandoned, much like Dexter. After a home visit, and an initial introduction of the two boys, they officially decided to adopt baby Benny.
The two boys are now inseparable, and Benny has helped Dexter feel less anxious and more confident. Their forever parents have truly been blessed by two little rescue mutts and they wouldn’t change a thing!
