Piper is just a puppy and in a tremendous pain. She’s much calmer than your typical Labrador Retriever, as her hips just can’t take the activity that you expect to see in her breed and age.
On the recommendation of her veterinarian, Piper has undergone her first surgery. She went through Femoral Head Ostectomy or FHO. Diamonds in the Ruff can also do much more for her if they raise enough money. It may be recommended she have a secondary surgery as well.
FHO is a surgical procedure that removes the head and neck from the femur. FHO surgery is performed to alleviate pain. It is a salvage procedure, reserved for condition where pain can not be alleviated in any other way.
Unlike most other hip surgeries, the head of the femur is not replaced, but is allowed to heal and develop its own fibrous scar tissue so that the joint is no longer bone-to-bone.In their mission to leave no pet behind, Diamonds in the Ruff also can’t leave a pet in pain when there is a solution to it. They need help so that Piper can lead a long, happy, pain free life.
